How to see Google's "not provided" keywords?

A client wants to know which traffic from which organic keywords is converting (say, branded keywords like the company name compared to non-branded ones like "purple widgets"). However, the vast majority of organic traffic comes from the "not provided" keywords since the website visitors are logged into Google.

Organic search keywords are not shown for logged in users to protect their privacy. Now if those logged in users click on an AdWords ad, their privacy no longer matters, and you will see what keyword they entered. So the workaround might be to run a small AdWords campaign to see the converting keywords. It's not quite apples to apples, but it may help inform your organic keyword efforts.

Here are a few ideas:

- Filter GA to include just organic traffic and then look at the Landing Page report with keyword as secondary dimension.

If you have done a good job of matching different pages to different keywords you should see that all of the known keywords have comparable metrics to the unknown ones and you can assume that the unknown keywords fall within a comparable keyword bucket. Then do your analysis using landing page/related keyword buckets.

-If the site is big enough, use Bing data and extrapolate.

Remember that Bing's index isn't nearly as fresh as Google's so wait at least a month after making changes to do any analysis.

-Use Google Webmaster Tools to do your analysis.

GWT shows how often the site appeared and how often the result was clicked. As a result, you should see higher numbers than GA which only tracks when the page loads, but you will still get complete keyword data for head terms.

What do you think?
